DASHAIN :GREAT FESTIVAL OF NEPAL:NEPAL TOUR:CULTURE OF NEPAL





Dashain is the most important and biggest festival of Nepal, celebrated by all casts and creed throughout the country. It is celebrated for fifteen days but the first ten days are the most important. This festival falls on the late October.
Dashain commemorates a great victory of the gods over the wicked demons. The first nine days of the festival marks the nine day battle between the Goddess Durga and fiercest demon king Mahisasurr and the tenth day marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons and the rest of the day as celebrations for this victory of good over evil. It is also believed that the Lord Ram ( 7th reincarnation of Lord Bishnu) slaughtered the demon king Ravana on the tenth day of this festival with the help of Goddess Durga. Thus, Goddess Durga is worshipped throughout the country as the divine mother Goddess and the most powerful protector.
The 1st day of Dashain is ‘Ghatasthapana’ which literally means placing a pot which symbolizes goddess Durga often with her image embossed on the side is place in the prayer room. This falls on the first day if the festival which marks the beginning of Dashain. On this day Kalasha is filled with holy water which is then covered with cow dung and sewn with barley seeds. A small rectangular sand block is made and the Kalash is put in the centre. This ritual is performed at a certain auspicious time which is determined by the astrologers and then the priest starts the puja by asking Durga to bless the vessel with her presence.The 7th day of Dashain is ‘Fulpati’. On this day Brahmins brought the royal Kalasha, Jamara, banana stalks and sugar cane tide with red clothe from royal house in Gorkha, a three day walk, about 169 km away from Kathmandu valley. A parade is held in Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace. Then there is a majestic display of the Nepalese army along with a celebratory firing of weapons that continues for ten to fifteen minutes honoring Fulpati. The Fulpati is taken to Hanuman Dhoka Palace after the occasions end in Tudikhel. The 8th day of Dashain is ‘Maha Asthami’. On this day sacrifices held in the every house through out the day. ‘Kaal raatri’ dark night is celebrated at night on this 8th day of Dashain. Many goats, buffalo are sacrificed at the goddess temple. The 9th day of Dashain is ‘Nawami’. This is the last day of Navaratri. On this day the official military rituals sacrifices of buffaloes under the gunfire salutes held in one of the Hanuman dhoka palace. This day is also known as demon hunting day. On this day Taleju temples gate are opened for the public. Thousands of devotees go and pay respect to the goddess on this day. The 10th day of Dashain is known as ‘Dashami’ Dashain. On this day we take Tika and Jamara from our elders and receiving blessing. We visit to our elders on this special day to receive blessing from them. People get together with their family members and have a feast and enjoy themselves with playing cards and having different delicious food on this day.
This whole festival is celebrated by visiting all the temples of the goddess’s different reincarnations, representations and appearances, and worshipping them. Different rituals have to be performed for each day. Children and youth play on the traditional Linge Ping (Bamboo swing) as it is believed that one must leave earth at least once during this festival. On the tenth day, Nepalese people visit their parents and all their relatives to receive Tika and blessings. Huge flocks of migrants return back to their remote villages to celebrate this festival.
Do: visit all the devi (goddess) temples of the country with Hindu and Buddhists locals. Play the Linge Ping with them. Receive the tika and blessings from elder Nepalese and enjoy the delicious treats. One good deed for a cause would be to donate some new clothes and chocolates to orphanages and the old age homes as this festival is the time of the year when everyone buys at least one new cloth, which for them and some other poor families the only chance for a new cloth and delicious food.

.Kirtipur is one of the oldest Human settlements in the Kathmandu Valley. This tiny town is recorded as an ancient capital of Nepal.Kirtipur Municipality is part of the Kathmandu District and only 5 Km away from Kathmandu and lies in the hilly region. Geographically, Kirtipur lies in between longitude 27˚ 38’ 30” and 27˚ 41’ 30” E and latitude 85˚ 13’ and 85˚ 19’ N, at altitudes ranging from 1284m to 1524m above mean sea level. The general decline of elevation is from south-west to north-east. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City lies in the northern side, while the Bagmati River separates the Lalitpur District with the Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City on the eastern side. Chalnakhel VDC borders Kirtipur Municipality in the south and Macchegaun VDC in the west.
Originally a Newari foundation, it is no doubt that Kirtipur is still a centre of Newari culture. It has been merged with surrounding villages to form the municipality of Kirtipur . However now a days people of different casts and religion stay in this place. So it consists of many temples, Gumbas and Churches as well.
In 1826 B.S. it was annexed to the Gorkhali kingdom of Nepal by King Prithvi Narayan shah on his third attempt, after bribing the doorman of the city. After he did this, to spite the city of Kirtipur, he cut off the noses of all the men in the city.

HOW TO PLAY
No elephants may lie down in front of the goal mouth. To do so will constitute a foul. A free hit is awarded to the opposing side from the semi-circle in front of the goal.

Teams are made up from the pool of elephants and balanced out as fairly as possible bearing in mind size and speed of the elephant. Once the pool of elephants has been selected, each elephant is categorized and marked as A,B,C,D, E and F.
Any team with 3 elephants in one half of the pitch is judged to have committed a foul.
An elephant may not pick up the ball in its trunk during play. To do so constitutes a foul and a free hit is awarded to the opposing team from the spot where the ball was picked up.
The defending players must be 15 meters from the spot.

No more than 2 elephants may be in the D at one time – one from the attacking team and one from the defending team.
There are no restrictions as to the height, weight or sex of the elephants.
Sugar cane or rice balls packed with vitamins (molasses and rock salt) shall be given to the elephants at the end of each match and a cold beer, or soft drink, to the elephant drivers and not vice versa.
The health and welfare of the elephants used in elephant polo tournaments is of prime concern. Abuse of the elephant is considered to be the most serious offence.

The Shey Phoksundo National Park (Nepali: शे-फोकसुण्डो She-Phoksundo) is the largest and only trans-Himalayan national park in Nepal. It was established in 1984 and covers an area of 3,555 km2 (1,373 sq mi) in the districts of Dolpa and Mugu in the northwestern part of the country. The protected area ranges in elevation from 2,130 m (6,990 ft) to 6,883 m (22,582 ft). Phoksundo Lake is the park's prominent feature, located at an elevation of 3,612 m (11,850 ft).[1]
The park's headquarters are in Palam, Dolpa District: ACTIVITIES:Trekking, mountaineering


ACCESS: Fly to Dolpa's Jufal Airport from Nepalgunj (20 minutes) and then a three-day walk.
WILDLIFES: Sheep, ghoral, musk deer, leopard, wild dog, marmot, weasel, mouse hare, rhesus and langur monkeys, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan black bear and jackals; 6 species of reptiles.


BIRDS: Over 200 species of birds including yellow throated marten, Tibetan partridge, wood snipe, white-throated tit, wood accentor and crimson-eared rose finch, impeyan pheasant, cheer pheasant, chough, raven, Tibetan snow cock, Tibetan twit, Himalayan griffon and lammergeier.
BUTTERFLIES: 29 species of butterflies
VEGETATION: 286 floral species of botanical importance: pine, walnut, willow, oak, cypress in the lower altitude and pine, spruce, juniper and birch at higher regions; berberis, wild rose and caragana are seen in alpine areas while the regions higher up are mostly arid with grass alpine meadows with barely any trees

ACCOMMODATION;Camping is most but In the towns of Dunai, Sangta, Chhepka and Ringmo some accommodation is available. These are basic trekkers lodges where food and limited supplies are available. Throughout varies spots within the National Park there are camp sites with toilets and shelters available. Park offices are to be found in Suliga, Chhepka, Palam Ringmo and Toijem. In Palam there is also a small visitor centre. Due to the limited facilities it is highly recommended to take tents, food, fuel, first aid kits and all other materials needed for a trekking trip.
