Indra jatra is known
for the celebration of God’s Indra’s day. Indra means ‘Lord of Rain’ and Jatra
means ‘Procession’. This festival is celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists.
It is celebrated for about eight days. Indra jatra is very interesting festival
because for the whole week people enjoy various traditional dances and witness
the chariot of Goddess Kumari, Lord Ganesh and Lord Bhairab being pulled
through the older parts of Kathmandu city. This festival is celebrated in the
month of September and is consider as the biggest religious street festival in
The first day of the
festival starts with an erection of a Long Pole, in Kathmandu Durbar Square.
The pole is obtained from a forest near ‘Nala’, a small town to the east of
Kathmandu. After the erection long pole there is a colourful display of mask
dancing by the mask dancers.
On another event on the
first day the participants visit shrines holding the lighted incense to honour
deceased family members where people sing hymns as they make the tour to place
small butter lamps on the way.
The procession starts
with Kumari Jatra known as Kwaneya where Goddess Kumari is brought out into the
street along with the chariot carrying human representation of the deities
Ganesh and Bhairab.
