Yomari Purnima

Nepal observed a public holiday today on the occasion of Yomari Purnima, one of the important festivals of Newari ethnic community. Yomari is the name of a delicacy while ‘purnima’ means the Full moon day. This dish is made up of rice flour that covers the ingredients like ‘chaku’ and ‘khuwa’ (both are sweet in taste). The Newari folks believe that its triangular shape is a symbol of knowledge and wisdom.
This festival is celebrated on the second day of the full moon, in the month of December. The Newari people worship and store up the Yomari which is to be eaten only on the fourth day of the festival.  As Nepal has an exemplary harmony among people of all kinds of castes and religions, the Newars even invite their friends and neighbors from different cultures to relish their dish.

Chataamari (Nepali pizza)

If you go to some Newari restaurants in Kathmandu with a craving for pizza, you may be addressed by the attendants with these amiable words- “Would you like to give a try to Nepali pizza?” And you may wonder what on earth that really is. Well, they are talking about none other than ‘Chataamari’ which is a very popular Newari (an ethnic group in Nepal) dish.
It is a type of pancake that is made out of rice flour that serves the function of base, just like in pizza. Onto it the toppings of onion, tomatoes, green peas, garlic, ginger and even egg or meat are added that make this cuisine complete. The whole lot is then kept in a flat pan containing some oil, heated with a lid covering it and then ……. There you are!!!!!!!!  Nepali pizza is ready to be finally served now!!

Pani puri

If you ask us about some spicy and mouth-watering dishes while you’re planning a tour in Nepal, we would suggest one thing for sure- Pani puri!! You might have second thoughts regarding its salubrity when you see vendors trading this dish rampantly in dusty streets of Kathmandu and elsewhere. But we daresay that you will be captivated by the appealing sensation that it gives to you.

Small breads are made and fried in oil until they pump up. That becomes the ‘puri’ part of pani puri. Onions and garlic are added along with some spices to the boiled potatoes that are to be put inside the ‘puri’ after ripping them open. And lastly, you can get a special ‘pani puri masala’ which on emulsifying with water serves you as the medium into which you dip the pani puri, moisten it and devour it. It is the remaining part, that is 'pani'.

Pani puri will certainly cater to the desire of those who love to try out something ‘hot and sour’.  So if you fall into that category or even not, do try it at least once whilst you are in Nepal to make your Nepal trip a bit spicy.

Thamel

For the travelers who have been to Kathmandu, Thamel is not a new name. Tour in Nepal is incomplete if one hasn’t been there. Being known as the ‘tourist district’ of Kathmandu, Thamel is an amalgamation of modernization as well as typical Nepali traditional décor. There are not only splendid eateries and best hotels in the town for accommodation but also some temples and houses which are built in Nepali style.

Some places which you might want to visit while you’re in Thamel are Garden Of Dreams, the Mandala Street and various souvenir shops that offer you the choices of Handicraft and art. ‘Thanka’ painting is one of the most popular things that tourists carry back to their homes. Besides these, the night life in Thamel that includes disco, pub and live music at various bistros allures not only the young and energetic crowd but also the middle-aged and older ones to relish their moments. Namo Buddha, Nepal

If you are seeking a place nearby Kathmandu, where you can savor the utmost stillness and peace of mind, then Namo Buddha might be the right choice. It is 40 km southeast of Kathmandu and is very much revered by the Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. They visit Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery in this place, which has a marvelous structural design and a serene ambience.

There’s a myth that Gautam Buddha offered his body parts to satiate the hunger of a tigress and her cubs. On denial, he cut his arm and let them have his warm blood instead. This legend is portrayed by a statue of Buddha and the tigers nearby him.

Besides these, visitors come to this place in groups for hiking and recreation. Not only beautiful photographs of the surrounding hills and suburbs will be captured by your camera in Namo Buddha, but also the moments of tranquillity will be locked up in your heart forever. To arrange the tour to Namo Buddha please feel to contact us by our web www.nepalonetours.com

MOMO

One of my Australian friends asked me what is so special about the cuisine ‘Momo’. His query was obvious since he finds me eating momos almost every day in my lunch! I tried to give him the details about the food as much as I knew but I failed to describe him about its history, nomenclature and so on.
So I did a brief research on it and came to know that Momo doesn’t have a unanimous place or country of origin. As the Newari ethnic community favors it to the most, it is believed that the Newari traders carried the skill of momo-making from Lhasa to Nepal. With some amendments in the ingredients and seasoning of the meal, Momo has been popular not only in Nepal but also in the neighboring countries like Tibet, India, Bhutan and many others.
It is made of white flour into which are ‘packed’ fillings of variety of mixtures like vegetables, paneer, cheese, buff, chicken and so on. Accordingly, momo is made for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. So why not try it once when you are in holidays in Nepal?? :)

Garden Of Dreams (GOD) - Kathmandu

If you ask any passionate couple where in Kathmandu they would like to go for a date, you will not be surprised by the unanimous answer- Garden Of Dreams. A perfect hideout located in Thamel, GOD pleases every visitor with its pretty and ‘romantic’ ambience. In fact you will be flabbergasted by the serenity and grandeur of this place in the midst of the heavy traffic and hectic life of the capital city.

It is not only the perfect rendezvous for love birds but has an ancient story of its own. It is said that the late Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher Rana generated it for the sake of his love, in early 1920. Originally, it was famous by the name of the garden of ‘Six Seasons’, with the assembly of six arresting pavilions, each devoted to one of the six seasons of Nepal. As a result of some revamp, it has gained a newer and magnificent look today.

There are also fountains, lavish furniture, verandas and birdhouses that will captivate the eyes of a beholder. We daresay that you will have a time of your life and relish every minute spent there with your beloved ones.

Jhor, Kathmandu

My cousin called me up and invited me to go on a short drive on each of our scooters. I asked her the whereabouts of the place that we were going to go and she gave me the details of a place called 'Jhor'. At first I was like...... "Where on earth is Jhor?? " I was running out of fuel for my scooter and didn't want to take the risk of heading towards the spot which was quite faraway.

However, I was assured that it was very nearby Dhapasi in Kathmandu and I would regret later on if I denied the offer on that day. So I buckled up my shoes and stormed out of my home yelling "Off I go to JHOR..........hope the trip won't be JHOOR (boring) ". In fact, it wasn't boring at all. It was such an awesome experience to drive on the well-pitched road that led us toward our destination. We stopped by a waterfall that allured us by its beauty and the musical sound of its flow. We got drenched, took some really good pictures and had so much of fun.

Then we walked towards a small temple named Baundeshwar Mahadev midst the big rocks and cave and offered some prayers as well. A short walk along the stairs built of stones took us to a spot from where we could relish the spectacular view of Kathmandu valley. That was it. We really had a good time and decided to return to our homes. As we were quivering due to our wet clothes, we entered into one of the motels on the way and warmed ourselves with hot coffee and some pastries.

And what else? We continued shivering throughout our way back home and finally got relief after we threw away the wet dresses and wrapped ourselves with a warm blanket.  :)

Bala Chaturdashi celebrated in Nepal

Bala Chaturdashi is the occasion which is observed by dropping or spreading seeds of seven different kinds (satbij) so as to reminisce our beloved ones who have deceased. On this day, devotees from all over Nepal as well as from India and other Asian countries come to visit the Pashupatinath temple which is in Kathmandu.

People keep themselves awake a night before this festival and light lamps along with the chanting of mantras. Next day, they take a bath in the holy Bagmati river and then carry out the seeds spreading ceremony. This is the day when the bereaved family members get to pay homage to their departed ones. So it is marked as an important festival in Nepal.

Gujiya

Tihar is a festival of lights and colors. At the same time, it is also the perfect opportunity to prepare different delicacies that can be offered to Goddess Laxmi and also for the celebration of the Bhaitika. Dry fruits hold special importance on the day of Bhaitika and some dishes can be prepared out of them. Gujiya is one such dish which will mollify you if you really love the dry fruits.

It is made of white flour (Aata) in which the ground or crushed dry fruits are put and packed. Deep frying in sunflower oil will first give you olfactory appeasement. The final cuisine is similar to the deep fried momo in appearance that will eventually fill you with the gustatory glees. It can be eaten immediately while it’s lukewarm or can be stored at room temperature for some days, as well.

Eating gujiya can be one of your worthy activities to do in Nepal.

GWARMARI- A TYPICAL NEWARI (NEPALI) CUISINE

If you go for a morning-walk along the narrow streets of Asan or to various temples in the Kathmandu valley, you will run into beautiful women and cordial men who are busy making a yummy-looking dish out of the white flour. Newari people who are indigenous to Kathmandu call this cuisine ‘Gwarmari’. We bet you won’t be able to repel the temptation to ask for more, once you have tasted the first piece of Gwarmari.

They prepare it in a very simple way. Flour is mixed with baking powder and salt in a vessel. To this mixture, water is added with constant stirring that finally yields a thick paste now. The vessel is left covered for an overnight. Next morning, some sunflower oil is heated into which a tablespoon of the flour paste is put and left to deep fry. They wait until the flour gradually fluffs up and gives a good brown color, which is now ready to be served. It can be eaten along with tea as your breakfast. You can also pick some curry as its add-on.

Lumle, Nepal- “Where nature meets science”

Most of us have heard a lot about Pokhara. In fact many of us have already been there, at least once in our lifetime. But few of us might have got wind of a place called ‘Lumle’ which is one of the key trails to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), the truly classic trek in Nepal. With the sobriquet of ‘Cherrapunji of Nepal’, Lumle receives the heaviest of rainfall as compared to other places of Nepal.

Lumle village is 32 Km west from Pokhara and lies on Pokhara-Baglung Highway. About an hour of drive from Pokhara, the headquarters of Kaski district, will lead you there. Nearby this village is located the Regional Agricultural Research Station which is an agricultural research hub and is visited by many national as well as international scientists, researchers, students and farmers every year. The laboratories here are well-equipped with the sophisticated and state of the art machines that will give you a glimpse of research laboratories in the developed nations.

Besides these, Lumle is rich in beautiful landscapes and varieties of flora and fauna. The most striking feature that captivated our minds when we had been there is the view of the lightning that could be seen among the surrounding hills during the night and not to forget- the lovely downpour. The rain shower made us unpack our backpack in search of a jacket even in the warmest of the months.

So, if you are planning to go there, do not forget to take a warm jacket or a shawl (no matter whether it is summer or winter!!)

Bhogate saadheko (Pomelo) in Nepal

Pomelo or Chinese Grapefruit is a citrus fruit that is offered to Goddess Laxmi on the day of Laxmi Puja (Tihar, the second main festival of Nepal). It is also an indispensable component during the Mha Puja (Another important occasion of the Newari ethnic group). Most of the Nepalese folks dwelling in the Hilly and Terai regions prefer to have a small kind of family gathering in which they prepare a dish out of it called ‘Bhogate saadheko’.

We like to call this day a ‘mini-festival’ for every Nepali household of those regions. The essential ingredients to make this cuisine look appealing are supplementary fruits like oranges, bananas, apples, mosambi and so on. Furthermore, additions of spices like curcumin powder, cumin, fenugreek as well as salt, sugar and not to forget- yogurt as the topping, will certainly gratify any foodie.

Not only has it gustatory delights, but research shows that it is also rich in nutrients required by our body like Vitamin C, Fiber, antioxidants and anti-aging agents. Scientists have discovered that it is good for the health of heart and is a potential cancer fighter. Nothing can be more surprising than these facts about Pomelo, isn't it??

So, you can try ‘Bhogate saadheko’ when you visit Nepal in winter. What say you?

It hasn't been a long time since  Dashain and Tihar, the two main festivals of Nepal bid farewell to the Nepalese people. Yet, they got to relish a new fiesta today- Elections for the new Constituent Assembly. With the government announcing a 4 day long  public holiday in consideration to the election, the Nepalese voters went to the polls in their nearest voting centers, today.

The foreign visitors in Thamel were excited to observe the people exercising their rights and were glad with all arrangements as well as tight security, that made peaceful elections possible.Nepalese folks expect stability and prosperity of their nation as the outcome of this election. The Tourism sector also anticipates the same so that Nepal becomes a secure destination for the travelers to visit.

Hiking to Sundarijal

If you want to get away from the hectic life of Kathmandu for a day or two, Sundarijal can be the perfect destination to opt for. As the name depicts (the word ‘Sundarijal’ means ‘beautiful water’ in Nepali), the place is full of stunning waterfalls and streams. We daresay that you won’t be able to resist the temptation to get drenched in one of those falls during your hike to the top of the hill (Unless it is extremely cold winter or freezing weather!)

Sundarijal is located 15 km North-East of Kathmandu. This is the hiking route to Chisapani of Nuwakot district. After a climb of about one hour, you will come across a gate which tells you that you are now entering into the Shivapuri National Park. Then you can visit the temple of Sundari Mai, the Hindu Goddess after whom the place gets its nomenclature.

Your hike will be constantly accompanied by a large water pipe that leads to a dam. Also you have to climb through the built-up concrete stairs and big stones at some places, along your way. There’s also a canyoning spot which falls on the route. If you like to go on mountain bike cycling or camping, Sundarijal offers you these adventures too.

Bandipur, The Lost Paradise in Nepal

It is rightly said, “Travelling is a journey, not a destination.” It was actually proved when our team from Nepal One Tours and Travels set off to Pokhara, in Dashain of 2011. The plan was to spend 2 nights in Pokhara and then return back to Kathmandu on the third day. But our minds changed when we got wind of a place named ‘Bandipur’ from our driver.

When we reached a small town called Dumre, we decided to extend our trip for a day and headed toward Bandipur which is 8-km away from the town. The road was quite narrow, which was appropriate for transport of small vehicles like jeeps and cars. The sceneries along the way were spellbinding which made us realize that missing out this spot would surely make us regretful if we hadn’t decided to go there.

We got off from our car and walked toward Bandipur Bazaar, in which no vehicles were allowed. The hotels were built in the traditional housing styles which offered every kind of facility that a tourist expects of. After a short walk around the Bazaar, we moved to its outskirts. We climbed up the Gurungche Hill in which ‘Thani Mai’ temple was situated. The panoramic view of Bandipur was spectacular from this spot. Besides, the sunset, the serpentine roads and the mesmerizing mountain ranges were worth of our observation.

You can also visit the Siddha Cave, villages, monasteries and some other temples in Bandipur. May you have a wonderful holiday in Bandipur! Cheers!!

Sarangkot

Watching the panoramic view of the white mountainous ranges turning golden yellow as the rays of the rising sun fall upon them, is perhaps the finest way to start your day in Pokhara. You can best get this experience from Sarangkot which is a hill of altitude of around 1592m. You can reach there in about 45 minutes if you are taking a car from Pokhara. An additional 45 minutes of hike will lead you to the main view point from where you will get to see the beautiful Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

The place also boasts of a wonderful outlook of the main city of Pokhara as well as its peripheries. Added to that, the thrilling adventure of Paragliding tandem flight can be the icing on the cake. A 30 to 45 minute flight in the air will surely take your breath away and you will undoubtedly cherish the moment for the rest of your life.
