Cultural values of flowers in Nepal- Makhamali

Makhamali is a flower that holds great cultural significance in Nepal. Its English name is Bachelor Button or Globe Amaranth. The Bhai Tika is the occasion when Nepalese folks make garlands and small bouquets (Guchchha) of this flower. Then these garlands are put around the neck and the guchchha on the ears of their brothers by the Nepali women.
This flower has a specialty that it doesn’t wilt for a long time even after it has been plucked from the main plant, given that it is kept away from light. This distinctive feature of this blossom portrays a myth in Nepali that just like the longevity of its endurance, the brothers of females who have been offered Makhamali, will have a long life.
Not only do they bear cultural value, they are also proved to hold medical properties like their seeds are found to contain high fiber and low saturated fats. Its oil is found to be useful for the patients of coronary heart diseases.

Rituals in Nepal-Swasthani Brata katha

Nepalese people have a month long ceremony of story-telling at their homes during the months of January-February. The story is called Shree Swasthani Brata katha which depicts the anecdote of the Hindu Goddess Swasthani. The tale is instigated on the full moon day of January and is continued till the next full moon day.

Some Nepali women even take fast during this one month. They opt for taking only one meal in a day and also visit different holy temples and rivers. The river of Sali is the popular site for pilgrimage all through this period. Hindu women have a deep belief that worshipping the Goddess with all of these offerings will fulfill the wishes and desires that they have in their hearts.

The story-telling is done mostly on the evenings but it may differ according to the households. Different cuisines are offered along with the prayers to Goddess Swasthani.

Panche Baja

January is a month for many wedding ceremonies in Nepal. As we have mentioned in our previous blogs, the family members and friends of the bridegroom go to bring the bride to his home in a group called ‘Janti’. They sing and dance to the music played by men carrying typical Nepali musical instruments called Panche Baja
Panche Baja is an assembly of five musical instruments that hold great importance in Nepali culture and tradition. They have their own idiosyncratic names too which are Damaha, Narsiha (trumpet), Jhyaali, Dholak (drum) and Shehnai. The experts play the music of various Nepali folk songs, namely the Dohori songs with the help of these instruments. Anybody who runs into one of the Jantis would surely want to dance to the beat of such melody.

Trekking In Nepal

Eleanor Roosevelt has said “A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” You may be wondering why we have quoted this saying in the context of trekking in Nepal. Well, being a country well-known throughout the world for its exotic beauty and peace, it wouldn’t be unfair to use this metaphor if we are describing something about Nepal.

Our country boasts of bounteous natural resources which appeal to the eyes of any beholder. (This applies to a woman’s beauty too, doesn’t it?) And when it comes to giving a free rein to your adrenaline rush, Nepal stands in the forefront too! (It would require a lot of ‘manly’ strength to do that, wouldn’t it?)    That’s why if somebody’s in a need to break away from his stressful life at least for some days, Nepal would be the perfect destination. On the contrary, you might get plenty of opportunities here to let the stress take over you! (You might be bemused again with this paradox!) Don’t worry; the stress that we are talking about is ‘beautiful stress’- the one that brings pleasure to you.

Trekking in Nepal could be one of the apt ways through which you can unleash your ‘bad stress’ and embrace the good one. There are many choices as to where you would go for the trek. The Mount Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu and Makalu are some of the popular ones. Based on the target regions, tour and travel companies will provide you with different itineraries and arrangements such as food and accommodation.

Not only that, they will also give you information about the best time of the year to do this activity, what to bring or buy, how to apply for the permits and passes and a lot more. Of course your fitness level is very important to be considered if you desire to go on long treks. Nepal One Tours can be your travel operator in this regard.

Traditional Nepali Wedding

Nepali wedding ceremonies are unique in their own way. If you come to Nepal during the months of December or January/February (regarded as the wedding season), you might run into Nepali folks who are merrily singing and dancing in groups along the streets of Kathmandu. These hordes are called ‘Janti’ in Nepali and they are all on their way to bring the bride to her husband’s home.
Based on the particular ethnicity, tribe or tradition of individuals, the nuptials are also of various types.    Accordingly, the wedding costumes are also designed as per the needs of peculiar culture. Some marital functions are concluded in the single day whereas others may last for few more days. Receptions are held mostly after the completion of the rituals of marriage.
So if you happen to be in a vacation in Nepal around this time, feel free to take glances at the procedures followed by a newlywed couple at various temples and other areas. Or if you have a plan to get hitched with your beloved one in this beautiful mountainous country, you are heartily invited here!

Makar Sankranti

Nepal is observing a public holiday today on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, also known as Maghi. It is a festival which is celebrated to mark the shift of the Sun into the zodiac constellation of Capricorn (called Makar in Nepali). It falls on the very first day of the Nepali month Magh.

It is believed that with the arrival of this fiesta, the short and chilling days of winter gradually turn into longer and warmer days, eventually giving an invitation to spring. It is also reputed as the festival of harvest in Nepal. The Sun is worshipped in the form of God on this day by the Hindu devotees. They take a bath on the sacred rivers which are nearby the places that they live in. The delicacies that are eaten are ghee, Chaakku, Teel ko laddu, tilauri and yam. So do not miss them out if you are on a holiday in Nepal on 15th of January.

Bull Fighting in Nepal

When it comes to bullfighting, Spain is the first name that strikes the mind of any aficionado. Of course there are some other countries too where this sport is practiced. But very few people might have got wind of the fact that Nepal hosts the game of Bullfighting on a special occasion called Maghe Sankranti , the first day of the Nepali month Magh. (15th January this year, i.e. 2014)

A small village called Taruka (80 km away from Kathmandu) which lies in the Nuwakot district organizes this exciting event every year.  Lots of adventure enthusiasts reach there to experience the thrilling beauty of this activity. The only striking difference between bullfighting in Europe and Nepal is that buffaloes are used in place of the bulls.

And you may wonder how long has it been since Nepal has been catering to this form of entertainment of audience. It’s been more than 200 years as told by the local residents. So if you happen to be in a holiday in Nepal on 15th of January, ask your travel operator to take you to observe bullfighting in Nuwakot.Nepal One Tours can help you with this.

Laligurans (Rhododendron) - The National Flower of Nepal

Laligurans (Rhododendron)
Trekking in Nepal is regarded as one of the admired ‘things-to-do before you die’. Those who have already been to the Himalayan foothills during the months of March to May must have noticed the verdant forests covered in the veils of red. These coverings are of none other than our own national flower Rhododendron, popularly called Laligurans in Nepal. Children in those regions will greet you with bouquets of this flower in their hands and a warm smile in their naïve faces.
The main species that is widespread here is Rhododendron arboreum. It can grow up to a height of about 30 mtr. In addition to the aesthetic value that it holds, Laligurans is also known to contain special therapeutic values. Researches done by different and special groups have claimed that various diseases like liver disorders, jaundice, diabetes, severe headaches and intestinal worms can be treated by the use of this elegant flower.

Kheer-Nepali pudding

Rice is the staple food in Nepal. Whether it’s for the breakfast or for dinner, Nepalese people mostly opt for ‘daal, bhaat and tarkaari’ (rice along with lentils and curry). But everybody gets bored if they are having the same meal routinely, don’t they? Perhaps, this is the reason why folks here have ‘devised’ various cuisines as alterations and add-ons to rice. Kheer is one such dish which holds special importance in this beautiful landlocked country.
Although the origins of this cookery are unclear, Kheer has however occupied a large share of Nepali culture. It is relished in special occasions like religious functions, weddings, birthdays and many others. Kheer is prepared by gently boiling rice along with milk and some sugar. You can then add some dry fruits like cashew nuts, raisin, cloves and others as per your taste.

Godawari

If you ask any Nepali kid studying in the primary or high school about Godawari, you are sure to get a unanimous answer from most of them. That is “Oh! That place. It’s where we had been to on our school picnic. Such a beautiful place it is!” Yes, Godawari holds such a charisma to allure the visitors of any age.
It gets its name from a flower. As the name suggests, this venue is rife with a variety of flora. There’s a botanical garden which is visited by numerous students, researchers as well as general public to earn know-how on plants and flowers found at various climatic conditions and altitudes of Nepal. Very nearby this place is situated a hill called Phulchoki that attracts many trekkers and other enthusiasts for short hiking. The best time to go there is during the months when you can enjoy a snowfall at that region.

Samosa

Have you ever noticed your Nepali friend speaking highly of a dish called samosa? We bet you must have at least heard of it or even seen it if you are really into the Nepali cuisine. Added to that, you surely would have tried it when you had visited nook and cranny of Kathmandu and other places of Nepal.
Samosa is a cuisine that’s triangular in shape. It is a kind of pastry which is either fried in oil or can even be baked. The basic ingredients to make a samosa are flour, potatoes, onions, spices, etc. which is especially meant to delight the vegetarians. Not only this, the non-vegetarians can also add ground beef, chicken or lamb to suit their taste. Though it is believed to have had its origins in India, samosa is one of the popular choices for your lunch in Nepal.

Daura Suruwal- Nepali National Costume

If you have ever got a chance to watch some (male) political luminaries of Nepal participating or delivering speech in national and international scenario, you must have noticed the costume that they had put on. Yes, the dress that they wear is called ‘Daura Suruwal’ and it is the national costume of our country. Added to this, ‘dhaka topi’ (a kind of cap) is an add-on to the identity of a Nepali man.
Not only is the Daura Suruwal (also called ‘Labeda Suruwal’) wore by public servants and other government employees but it is also equally admired by the general civic. It has become the trendiest among all other options to glam oneself up during the formal and informal ceremonies, including their own weddings.
So if you happen to be in one of your Nepali friends' wedding ceremony or if you're invited to any function during your tour in Nepal, why not try out being dressed in Daura Suruwal??? Have a think about it .

Nepalese Folk Songs

There might be just a fistful of guests who have been to Nepal but haven't heard about the famous 'Resham Firiri' song. Not that every tourist must have listened to it. What we mean to say is that this particular Nepalese folk song is popular for its know-how among most of them. Perhaps it is the melody that lures even the visitors who do not know or understand Nepalese language, to hum this song and dance in jubilation. And maybe this is a perfect paradigm of the saying “Music has no language”.

Nepalese folk songs are given different names by the corresponding clans who have been practising them since long ago. To list a few among them are Dohori songs, Deuda, Newari songs, Tamang selo and so on. Rodi Ghar is a kind of institution formed by Gurungs of Nepal to perform their traditional music and dance. This shows the love that the Nepalese folks have for their peculiar culture and tradition.

So while you are in a vacation in Nepal, do not forget to ask your Nepali friend about ‘Resham Firiri’. In fact you can learn to sing it at your own accord by getting a CD or DVD that contains this song!! How cool is that??
